Torsten Fleige-Lütgering, Head of Civil Engineering and Traffic, explains: "Due to the unpredictably wet weather last fall, winter and this spring, the construction site of the K1 serpentine near Lichtenberg is still in a soaked and difficult condition. The north-facing location of the construction site is also delaying the drying process. These circumstances mean that the subsoil on this exposed slope is not stable enough without further measures. We are therefore currently in the process of replacing the soil in some areas with coarse gravel material in order to create the necessary load-bearing capacity in the subsoil. This will also achieve the necessary static stability."
As things stand, these measures mean that the completion of this road construction project will be delayed until the beginning of June 2024.
Michael Buntfusz, Head of the Environment Department, adds: "We are seeing that the amphibian migrations in the Oelbertal valley are now complete. This has the positive effect for road users that the resulting speed reductions on the detour routes can now be lifted."
The administration asks all road users for their understanding.
