Salzgitter

Neighborhood mothers

To pave the way for women with a migration background into the labor market and to make it easier for families with foreign roots to contact German authorities or institutions - the "Stadtteilmütter" project was launched in 2010.

In the meantime, the district mothers have established themselves as mediators. They always work in problem-intensive areas in their district. Because they are well known there and are able to assess the situation of their neighbors, they are able to gain access to people who are otherwise difficult for Salzgitter city employees to reach, who do not visit counseling centers or who do not take advantage of the services offered by the city's family helpers.

It is helpful that the district mothers come from the same cultural background. In addition, the "mothers" learn something for themselves, improve their German language skills, increase their self-confidence and independence - all qualities that are in demand on the job market.
