Immeasurable suffering, destruction and now more than 40,000 fatalities - this is the situation in the areas of Turkey and Syria affected by the earthquake.
Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, First Mayor Stefan Klein, MdL, and Second Mayor Christian Striese jointly express their condolences on behalf of the City of Salzgitter: "We are deeply saddened by this catastrophe. Our sympathy goes out to the victims of this natural disaster and their families. That is why we are asking all the citizens of Salzgitter to show solidarity with the people on the ground and help to alleviate the suffering, for example by donating to "Aktion Deutschland hilft", a strong alliance of German aid organizations."
All three mayors emphasize: "Salzgitter has become home to many people who come from Turkey or Syria and especially from the earthquake regions there. With this appeal, we also want to support our residents whose friends or relatives have died or been injured as a result of this natural disaster or are now without shelter, and stand by them".
As an outward sign of sympathy, the city of Salzgitter has flown all flags on its public buildings and schools at half-mast.
Based on the experience of the Ukraine crisis, the city administration has already advised and supported many individuals and groups since the devastating earthquake and helped to channel the many offers of help.
This is because many Salzgitter citizens want to help and do so as unbureaucratically and effectively as possible. The help should arrive where it is urgently needed. But what is needed where and how and when does the donation arrive? And doesn't a monetary donation make more sense than a donation of clothes?
Our Turkish and Syrian fellow citizens want to offer their family members and friends from the earthquake regions temporary protection and security in Salzgitter as quickly as possible until the situation on the ground in the earthquake regions has stabilized. But how can they do this quickly and with legal certainty?
These questions should not remain unanswered.
For this reason, the city administration is setting up two additional special telephone numbers from Thursday, February 16.
Note from 14.04.2023: As of today, the special numbers are no longer active because they have not been used for some time.
