Two tracks of Verkehrsbetriebe Peine-Salzgitter GmbH (VPS) lie under the bridge. The demolition work can only be carried out during the annual breaks in VPS operations. "As a result, the demolition work was under great time pressure," explains Torsten Fleige-Lütgering, the head of civil engineering and transport for the city of Salzgitter.
Two hydraulic track excavators with an operating weight of 40 tons and a 24-ton mobile excavator were used. Mounted on these excavators, hydraulic hammers, demolition and concrete shears as well as demolition grabs were used.
Fleige-Lütgering explains the demolition: "To save time and "lighten" the bridge, the bridge railings and crash barriers were dismantled in advance and the road surface was also removed. The VPS tracks had to be specially protected with mats to cushion falling concrete parts. The demolition work itself went smoothly. Shortly before the work was completed, a hydraulic fault occurred on an excavator, which delayed the completion of the work. Despite this, VPS rail operations were able to resume as planned. A total of around 164 cubic meters of material was demolished. This included the reinforced concrete bridge superstructure, caps and abutments. All in all, I am very satisfied with the start of this major construction project. Technical failures can always occur. I would like to thank everyone involved for their professional work."
