Rent index City of Salzgitter
With the entry into force of the Rent Index Reform Act (MsRG) on July 1, 2022, the independent city of Salzgitter, as a municipality with more than 50,000 inhabitants, is obliged to maintain a rent index. Section 558c (4) of the German Civil Code (BGB) was amended to include this obligation.
The publication of a rent index can take the form of a simple rent index or a qualified rent index. The legislator leaves it up to the respective local authorities to choose the calculation method, i.e. to decide whether a simple rent index or a qualified rent index is to be prepared. Rent indexes are to be adjusted to market developments every two years.
In a council resolution dated 22.02.2022, the Salzgitter City Council (0164/18) commissioned the administration to prepare a simple rent index and update it. The simple rent index was published in 2023 and updated in 2025.
