The benefits for education and participation were introduced to give children and young people from financially disadvantaged families the opportunity to take advantage of learning and leisure activities and thus open up better educational and development opportunities for them.

The education and participation package includes the following benefits:

1. excursions and school trips lasting several days
The costs incurred for one-day and multi-day excursions with school, KITA and child day care can be covered.

2. personal school supplies
Pupils receive EUR 195.00 (as at 01.01.2024) for school equipment (e.g. for school bags, sports equipment and writing, arithmetic and drawing materials):

130.00 euros for the 1st half of the school year
65.00 euros for the 2nd half of the school year

Since 2021, personal school supplies have been adjusted annually by the same percentage as the standard requirement.

3. school transport
Travel costs to school from grade 11 onwards can be covered if the distance between home and the nearest school is more than three kilometers and the costs are not already covered by another body.

4. learning support
If the main learning objectives are at risk and school offers are not sufficient, the costs of private tuition can be covered.

5. additional expenses for lunch
The costs for lunch at school, in the day care center or in child day care are covered in full.

6. participation in social and cultural life
15 euros per month are taken into account for membership fees, lessons in artistic subjects or leisure activities. The monthly budget can also be saved for participation in (more expensive) leisure activities.

School supplies and travel costs are provided in the form of cash benefits. Vouchers are issued for the other services or the allowances are paid directly to the service provider.

However, the service provider must conclude an agreement with the City of Salzgitter in advance regarding the provision and processing of benefits from the education package.

Application procedure:

Recipients of housing benefit and child supplement must apply for all benefits separately. The application for recipients of benefits under the Second and Twelfth Social Code and the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act is already submitted with the application for the main benefit. However, it is necessary to be specific in order to make a claim. The forms provided on this page can be used for this purpose.

By the way:

Learning support must always be applied for separately. The application for learning support must be submitted to the school. The school certifies the necessity and then sends the application directly to the benefits office for education and participation.
