But what is the number of people who are staying with friends or relatives and have not yet claimed any public benefits?
It is estimated that there are at least as many, but this is the problem. In order to be able to provide targeted help and advice, the administration asks all those arriving from Ukraine to register with the city administration.
The easiest way to register is to use the registration form for refugees, which is published at www.salzgitter.de/ukraineanmeldung (opens in a new tab).
Registration is also possible by e-mail to ukrainehilfestadt.salzgitterde or by telephone from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on 839 7777.
The request to register with the administration is aimed at all Ukrainian war refugees - regardless of their decision to apply for social benefits.
Rather, the aim is to get an overview of how many people from Ukraine have already arrived in Salzgitter and where.
"In the short term, it's about immediate and pragmatic help, not just accommodation and food, but also support with formal issues such as the granting of benefits, status, health care, but also the psychosocial care that is urgently needed in individual cases," says Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, "In the medium term, however, it will also be about ensuring an orderly procedure for the reception and fair distribution of war refugees."
"Every helping hand is needed. We would like to thank all those who are showing solidarity and support with their help," added Dr. Dirk Härdrich, Head of Social Affairs.
Extensive multilingual information on many current issues and registration forms for citizens who would like to offer support or accommodation are published on the city's website (see below).
