Home slaughter refers to the slaughter of an animal owned by the slaughterer outside of authorized slaughter facilities, whereby the meat and products made from it may be used exclusively within the animal owner’s own household.

This also means that this meat may not be given to acquaintances or relatives who do not live in the owner’s household. It does not matter whether the meat is given away for free or in exchange for payment.

If you plan to give meat to third parties, the slaughter mustbe carried out at an EU-approved slaughterhouse.

There are no legal hygiene regulations governing home slaughter. You are responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of your work.

The following are subject to official (slaughter animal and) meat inspection (including trichina testing, if applicable) for home slaughter:

• Cattle
• pigs
• Sheep
• farm game
• Goats and other cloven-hoofed animals,
• horses and other solipeds,

provided their meat is intended for human consumption.
