Measures for more safety

In order to make the situation safer for all road users in the city area, the Salzgitter Accident Commission has inspected several roads with a conspicuous accumulation of accidents.

The commission, consisting of representatives from the traffic authority, the civil engineering and traffic department as well as the Salzgitter municipal road maintenance company (SRB) and the Salzgitter/Peine/Wolfenbüttel police inspectorate, focused on roads where there had been an increase in accidents. The members focused on accidents in the past three years involving personal injury or where vehicles had left the road.

Kattowitzer Straße/Gesemannstraße

One of the accident blackspots was the Kattowitzer Straße/Gesemannstraße area in Lebenstedt. Seven accidents with ten minor injuries have occurred there in the past three years.

The main problem here is that many drivers coming from Gesemannstraße turn left into Kattowitzer Straße and disregard the right of way of vehicles coming from the left.

In order to avoid accidents in the future, the commission members have decided to prohibit vehicles from turning left at this point. Signs to this effect have already been erected.

Berliner Straße/Hirschgraben

Another problem is the high volume of traffic on Berliner Straße in Lebenstedt. Especially for vehicles turning from Hirschgraben into Berliner Straße, there is often only a limited view of the larger busy road. The result in the past three years: six accidents with two serious and six minor injuries.

In order to give drivers the opportunity to keep a close eye on the traffic on Berliner Straße when turning, a suitable spot was chosen at the junction of Hirschgraben to put up a "Stop" traffic sign and mark the road with the corresponding stop bar.

District road 1 (Humboldtallee) between Salzgitter-Fredenberg and Westfalenstraße

In recent years, there have been eleven accidents with four minor injuries on Humboldtallee between Fredenberg and Westfalenstraße in Lebenstedt.

Even though the consequences of the accidents have so far been minor - only three accidents caused minor personal injury - measures have been sought to reduce the number of accidents on this road. The most common cause was vehicles colliding with a tree. The reasons were inappropriate speed on wet or icy roads (nine out of eleven accidents). Many accidents also occurred at dusk and in the dark (seven out of eleven accidents).

The accident commission found that the existing signage, including the warning signs "Caution bend" and a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour, were apparently not noticed or not observed. Therefore, in addition to additional signage and renewal of the road markings, it decided to increase speed monitoring.
