The care advisors coordinate the individual measures, support those affected and establish the necessary contacts with the relevant authorities.

They also take preventative action, advising and informing people who do not yet have a care case in the family but want to find out more, in the form of individual discussions and presentations.

In order to find out exactly how they can help those in need of care and their relatives, the advisors visit those affected in their homes. On the one hand, the people in need of care are often no longer mobile, and on the other, it is important for the employees to get a comprehensive picture of the situation at home.

The visit helps them to provide those affected with tailored tips on how to improve their living environment, such as bathroom conversions, the installation of grab rails or similar aids. They also provide advice on care-related assistance such as the provision of care aids and the relief of relatives through the use of volunteer helpers. The care support point has a lot of information material available and issues this depending on the situation of the person in need of care and their relatives. The staff ensure that they remain neutral and do not make any recommendations. The advice is generally comprehensive in order to enable the people concerned to make the right decision.

The care advisors also provide support when someone is admitted to a home. The decision to place a loved one in residential care is always difficult, but is sometimes unavoidable. The decision to move into residential care involves questions about the right facility as well as financial issues. Thanks to its contact to a large network of care insurance companies, authorities and institutions, the care support point can help to answer important questions and solve urgent problems.

On May 28, 2009, a framework agreement was concluded between the long-term care insurance funds and the municipal umbrella organizations in Lower Saxony to improve the range of advisory services for people in need of long-term care and their relatives. This, together with partial funding from the care insurance funds, laid the foundation for the establishment of the Salzgitter care support center.

On May 26, 2010, the Salzgitter City Council voted in favor of the establishment of such an advice centre under the management of the local authority. On January 1, 2011, the Salzgitter care support center began its work with two care advisors. In 2021, the care support center has been in existence for ten years.

The care support center is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 am to 12.30 pm and additionally on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2 pm to 4 pm.
