Mine train restored in front of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt station

Many people know it: The mine train on the station forecourt in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt.

In recent years, this iron veteran of Salzgitter's mining history has unfortunately been somewhat affected by the ravages of time and vandalism. But the substance is - no wonder - "iron" good and so a restoration project of the city was recently successfully carried out.

The partially sagging substructure (gravel bed with wooden sleepers and rails) was completely replaced at great expense by the SRB. The train had to be completely lifted for this! With this new, stable substructure, the landmark will not be thrown off course any time soon.

The Salder Castle Municipal Museum then took over the complete refurbishment of the vehicles. With a lot of rust and old paint residue removed, primed and finally carefully repainted, the locomotive and carriages now shine in new splendor. Several old or damaged wooden elements were also replaced.

In this way, the mine train can continue to serve as a visible reminder of the town's important mining and industrial history at its old location. And anyone wishing to delve deeper into these topics is cordially invited to the Salder Castle Municipal Museum. The relevant sections on Salzgitter's past can be viewed there again - as always, admission is free!

The mine railroad consists of a Siemens underground locomotive (built in 1960), two small mine cars, two crew cars, a large "Teckel", a small round car and a large round car.

The train was donated by the former Peine-Salzgitter AG in 1983 and comes from the stock of the Haverlahwiese mine, which ceased ore extraction in 1982. The underground train was set up in August 1985.
