Renewal of the K1 between Salzgitter-Lichtenberg and Altenhagen

Since Monday, 28.08.2023, the Civil Engineering and Traffic Department has been resurfacing the K1 between Salzgitter-Lichtenberg, Burgberstraße and Altenhagen.

The roadworks will be carried out under full closure of the K1 between the end of Salzgitter-Lichtenberg and the access road to Lichtenberg Castle.

Traffic to and from Oelber am weißen Wege, Altenhagen and Burg Lichtenberg will be diverted via Salzgitter-Osterlinde. The Peak Hotel and Restaurant at Burg Lichtenberg will remain accessible during the construction period. Bus services will also use the detour route.

Changes to the traffic routing within the town of Salzgitter-Osterlinde will be necessary to handle the detour traffic.

The Civil Engineering and Traffic Department asks for your understanding for these necessary measures. There are no further restrictions in Salzgitter-Lichtenberg apart from the junction to Evangelienberg.

The construction work is expected to last until the beginning of June 2024.

Further information on the refurbishment:

During the first two weeks of the closure, the construction site equipment will be installed and preparatory work will be carried out (e.g. removal of the outdated crash barriers).

Next, the asphalt layers are removed as preparatory work. These vary greatly in thickness due to the history of the serpentine.

A gravel base layer is then created on which the cable excavator for dynamic intensive compaction is installed. The cable excavator itself is transported as a heavy load and set up on site using mobile cranes. The cable excavator has a height of approx. 25 meters and a width of 5 meters. An approx. 15-ton drop weight is pulled up to different heights on steel cables. This is dropped in order to generate dynamic intensive compaction. For this purpose, test areas are first created in order to "adjust" the dynamics of the intensive compaction to the subsoil. This process is observed and evaluated by an expert. Once the test areas have been successfully created, dynamic intensive compaction is carried out in the entire area of the serpentine. The compaction creates vertical columns that are backfilled with coarse gravel and compacted. In this way, the entire subsoil of the serpentine is made permanently load-bearing and resistant to deformation.

A period of approx. 4 weeks is planned for this. This work is scheduled to begin on 11.10.2023.

After this work, the cable excavator will be dismantled (heavy transport) and removed. The "normal" road construction will then begin with frost protection layers, gravel base layers and asphalt paving as well as "ancillary installations" (e.g. new crash barriers).

In addition, the asphalt surface of the road from the end of Lichtenberg up to the parking lot will also be renovated.
