Salzgitter

Expansion of district road 1 completed

Since Wednesday, June 12, the K 1 between SZ-Lichtenberg and Burgberg has been open to traffic again.

In addition to the basic structural renovation of the road itself, a slope stabilization in the area of the serpentine had to be carried out in recent months.

Torsten Fleige-Lütgering, Head of Civil Engineering and Traffic, explains: "We started the construction work at the end of August last year. A special feature of this road construction project was the slope stabilization using so-called dynamic intensive compaction (DYNIV). The basic principle is the transfer of falling energy to the surface of an originally compressible and less load-bearing soil in order to improve its soil mechanical properties. The DYNIV was completed at the end of November 2023."

He goes on to explain the delays: "Due to the extremely poor weather conditions with heavy rainfall events, the work had to be paused repeatedly. The existing soils were so soaked that the load-bearing capacity was not given and made it necessary to replace the soil with coarse gravel material."

Following completion of the remaining work (marking, installing crash barriers and delineators, signage), which has taken place over the past few days, the road can now be reopened to traffic.

Compensatory and replacement planting as a compensatory measure is still pending. This is planned for the end of this year or the beginning of next year.

The planned budget of around 1.9 million euros can in all probability be met. This measure is being funded by the Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Transport as part of the GVFG (Municipal Transport Financing Act).
